Just a thought since this is the year lennon would have turned 70, since "solo" tunes have been done here before, ie: "Mother" May I suggest this as the challenge for the month, or should this suggestion be re-visited on October 9th

LOL, I guess that is fine for now. Thematically, I liked the song. But lyrically and musically, this song never impressed me much. I am not sure why, since most people rank this song rather highly in the solo Lennon catalog. I usually skip it. Always seemed like "Lennon Lite" to me musically.

But that is ok, maybe we can do something with it.

I respect your opinion, and yes this is as you say "Lennon Lite" but no more so than "Love" or "Imagine" and even "Woman" the strings were originally written for the arrangement of Harry Nilsson's cover version of "Many Rivers Too Cross" on "***** Cats" and this I believe is a true Lennon classic and as you've said ranks high in his solo catalog perhaps without the standard "acerbic" Lennon wit and challenged lyrics but never the less a "beautiful song" There are a few demos of the song that is just Lennon and acoustic guitar which could lead to inspiration for the challenge, although I have none, but perhaps someone here could post a sample to get into the mood. Good luck to everyone who participates in this celebration of the poet, musician commonly know as John Lennon :D

Well, the songs Imagine and Love I put into the almost classical realm, which gives it a sort of elevation that I don't think there is in this song. I guess I think of it as "Americanized" Lennon at this point, lol!

Well, I guess that's what happens to the music when musicians meet from East to West ....
... (coast) that is

This one might prove to be too difficult. I tried to get a good vocal, then I tried to get a good instrumental, and failed at both. If anyone gets a decent pella for it, let me know!

Perhaps the few alternative cuts of #9 found on this boot may be of some use  ... and yes if anyone captures a pella do share here :D

The Alternate Pear Walls And Bridges

Thanks TJT for giving it a try .... but hopefully you'll give it another shot, in "Spite Of All The Danger"

Yes this is a challenge, but try hearing the simularitites to Harry Nillison's "Many Rivers To Cross" as that is where Lennon lifted the string arrangement he wrote, by doing that perhaps another path to a fuse might work, welcome back hope this will be a interesting challenge for all!

Think Fame

Not quite  it's

JOHN LENNON
and ALAINA REED:

Chastity versus Sensuality...

This interesting two-way kiss happened in 1974,
at the Opening Night Party for the musical SGT. PEPPER,
at the Club Hippopotamus, in New York City.

Dig This:

With Bianca Jagger and Ronnie Spector no less .... Loved to have been in on that party :D

Yes i know the song well.
But.....having similarities, and being able to do something listenable/interesting with them are two very very different things!

Sorry, i came up with nothing, i drew a total blank.

I managed something on my third try.
First I tried Number Nine Storm (John Lennon vs Skazi),but it was hard to beatmatch to that degree.
Then I tried Number Nine July (John Lennon vs The Mussies) but it was too nasty.

on the third try I hit upon
Tomorrow Never Dreams (John Lennon vs The Beatles)

Image

John Lennons'
'#9 Dream'
vs
The Beatles'
'Tomorrow Never Knows'.

too clashy for my ears Dave. :(

Now try just superimposing the TNK drums over (and IN TIME with) the whole of #9 Dream...that would work :)

Interesting choose to mix, the menacing qualities of TNK fits the dreamy atmosphere of #9 (the "seagull" sounding guitars) do try the simpler approach MP3j suggested as that will beef up the blend and create a sense of harmony

Thank you for taking on a difficult task :D

about #9 Dream....

there is a material on which you could work to create new isolations using OOPS techniques :

- Lennon : Walls & Bridges : quad mix (front + rear) (like Bless You, the quad mix has a channel with an acoustic (just Lennon on acoustic guitar + voice) channel
- Harry Nilsson ***** Cats : quad mix (front + rear) (the rear channel has just the voice + orchestra section- perhaps it is possible to remove Harry's voice using OOPS technique with front + rear channels)

another multichannel version of #9 Dream to work is #9 Dream 5.1 source from the Lennon DVD video collection

(btw Fame has been "recycled" but at the very end of one extended jam ending take of Clean Up Time during the Double Fantasy sessions (the main riff + guitar solo 'noodling' is played over and over in the end of this take of Clean Up Time).
Sure it has something to do with the feeling of the song, + the fact that Earl Slick was with Lennon at the Carlos Alomar/Bowie sessions...)

Here is the quad-mix " 2 channel stereo mix from the direct discrete 4 channel tape" track converted from a flac file to high quality 192 kbps mp3 for the next 10 down loaders to perhaps create samples from :)

http://rapidshare.com/files/414262285/_9_Dream__Quad-Mix_Down_.mp3

This was snatched from the green devil, so if anyone is interested in the full album pop on over there and get it
