Hey y'all, it's June !

And it's the moment to Mix & Mash 'I Want To Hold Your Hand. A bit overlooked in Remixers circles perhaps, but I like this song. It was the Beatles breakthrough in the US (and hence the World outside the UK), and for me it also sounds as a breakthrough in their songwriting. They went with this song from being a very good group, to the unique position that still sells them records 40 years after their break-up.

I think the moment they achieved this super-status is the moment that IWTHYH moves from the verse to the middle-eight ('and when I touch you......'). This is such a great move, unexpected (and a bit 'rough' in songwriting technique), but it completely changes the mood, the rythm, the feeling of the song. A few bars later R&R is restored to exuberance again with the 'I can't Hide' (of " I get high', as Dylan heard it).

One of the best examples of a true Lennon & McCartney composition, capturing the best of both.

Enough blurp, let's go, and give IWTHYH a new lease of life !

I know there are some 5.1 isolations around (Love?), a good number of cover versions, 'deluxe Sessions', and live perfomances; Enough to go by ?

Mashed the two enigmatic tracks from late 1963; these songs made the Beatles the first super-group, and was key in their conquest of the US.

Pretty straightforward mash; added percussion from a cover by Dollar.

Couldn't get the solo the ways I would like it; but hey, this is the only entry for this month, so you can't demand too much !

Actually, that has a certain charm of its own. I rather like it. The guitar from IWTBYM didn't quite mesh to me, but the vocals did, and very much liked the percussion from Dollar, I thought that was great!

I actually do have a submission for the month, I really really hesitate to submit it. Can I be kind of horrified by my own submission? It didn't start out as it ended up, but, um, well, first, it could use a bit more polishing up, but thematically I was disturbed by it.

So, I duck and cover and disown it at the same time. Maybe you can all think of it under the category of "novelty" rather than a serious attempt at something.

So, you are warned! I may regret putting this one up. But here goes:

Now, I will flee the room.

Wonderful concept, and it actually mashes quite well ! This mix goes further in the direction I described in the blurp in the Cellar of Remixes: Lennon's object of affection can have any gender in IWTHYH. Rumours abounded in his lifetime, but Lennon (& Macca) always denied any visit of John to any YMCA or similar institute. I don't recall he ever expressed affection in his lyrics to a woman (expect for his mother and Yoko, whom he also called Mother). So draw your own conclusions.

And so we conclude June's Song Of The Month Challenge. The jury wishes to express that it was very hard to select the top mix, amongst so many excellent contributions.

Still, this month's prize (a night - all expenses paid - with Patty Boyd in Liverpool's Beatles hotel) must be awarded !

After long deliberation, the jury decided to go with TJT's submission; especially appreciated are its originality of song selection, the fitting and elegant lyrics, and - most of all - the lack of clashing guitars during the solo's.

So the award will now be handed to........... But wait, that mix was submitted 12 minutes into July, so it can't compete in June !

We end on this low note, but trust that July will see an even richer harvest of mixes !
