Hey guys,

I'm posting this so I don't forget to do so later. My suggestion for the March 2010 SotM is "Step Inside Love." You can use any version you'd like--the official Cilla version, the Beatles Anthology 3 version, the versions on the BZ Auction Tape, etc. See what you can do with it. I'll be trying it out myself, also (it will be my first remix!!) :)

This one of my favourite Macca songs, so glad it is this month's challenge !

To be honest, this remix has been wriggling on my harddisk for a quite a while now; its is a track form a Top Secret Project that I'm working on, but can't seem to finish.

It is produced from the rehearsal tape; double tracked the guitar, and the vocals at some point.

Lossless (who cares?)

I like the slight touch of psychedelia on the guitars. Very nicely done !

I agree with your comment on the download page that the track seemed a bit overproduced in its final form. But this is a very nice version of it! You never seem to disappoint! Terrific, BDJ!

Certainly an interesting combination and does work. Some of the transitions might need a bit more "fluid" of work. But still a nice one.

What does Paul say at the end ? 'Joe Perreiry' ? What does it refer to ?

Well, interestingly enough, when I looked up the lyrics to the song Step Inside Love, it is listed as Joe Prairies and the Prairie Wallflowers.

However, Paul distinctly doesn't pronounce it Paries, he pronounces it as you wrote above.

A bit of further research though, shows that Joe-Pye is a type of weed.

Quote:
Joe-Pye Weed, Eupatorium purpureum, is an amazing plant that is an herb, a wildflower, a butterfly plant and an ornamental for the flower bed. It obtained its name after a Native American herbalist, named Joe-Pye, cured fevers using the Eupatorium plant. Though we tend to think of it as a wildflower in the U.S., it's long been an ornamental plant in England where cottage gardens are so popular. Joe-Pye is perky and full of blooms when many other plants are finished and it lasts until hard frost. Place it in the back of the border or give it a corner all its own in a sunny, fertile position. Joe-Pye does best when it's placed in a moist location, but it will adapt to a dryer location, even though it won't do its best. If you enrich the soil with organic matter and keep it watered, it should do fine

So, I am surmising that Paul is in fact doing a pun on Joe-Pye, tying it in with the word Praries to form a fictictious name of a group.

Wow, that is very clever ! :o
I would never have made the connection with Joe-Pye myself, but it does seem to make a lot of sense. I suppose the standard Amercian expression goes something like 'prairy Wildflowers'. Paul changed wild flower to wallflower, and added the Joe Pye-rarie bit to make it sound like a 1950's R&R band ("John Silver and the Quarrymen....).

Question is, why did he come up with this particular phrase at that moment during the White Sessions ? In my view, people never say 'random' things, even if they try to (see BDJ's Cellar for interpretation of some of Lennon's 'goobeldy gook'.) Lennon made a lot more of those quasi random remarks than Paul, so can we explain this one of Paul ?

1) we can first consider it at a superfical level; what is he actually saying ? It is a about a flower (Joe-Pye) and more flowers (wall/wild flowers). Now Paul referred to flowers on other occassions (Red Rose Speedway, Flowers in the Dirt) and I remember lyrics like 'my love is like a flower', but I can't remember which song it is. Lennon didn't refer to flowers at any time, as far as I know, so it appears Paul has a 'thing' for flowers.

2) But why think of flowers in the context of 'Step Inside Love' ? There ae no flowers in the lyrics of the song. Here, we have to speculate, but only a little bit. Paul wrote SIL for Cilla Black, so in his mind the singer is a woman, even though he sang it himself during the White Sessions. Picture the situation: the woman saying 'Step INside Love' implies that the man (let's keep it straight....) is OUtside. In other words, this is a scene at the doorstep of the woman's house; this fits well with the 'come in out of the cold' lyrics.

So, what would a guy bring to the door of his targetted beloved ? A nice bouquet of flowers, of course.
Therefore, Paul's thoughts may have strayed to flowers as he pictured the doorstep scene, while singing SIL.

3) OK, so flowers it is, rather straightforward. But why these flowers ?

-Joe-Pye weed ? This is a tricky one, since we don't know what Paul actually associated Joe-Pye with; he may have known that Joe Pye was an actal person; an Indian healer in the wild west days, who used this weed/flower to as a medicine. Which diseases he cured his not known, but I found that the flower is also considered as an aphrodysiac (the Viagra of the Wild West?). This may be speculative to assume that Paul thought of this in the context of the rather intimate lyrics of SIL (although he might have), but at the very least it is likely that he associated Joe-Pye with drugs of some sort.

In addition, Paul may have thought of Pye Records at the same time; he almost certainly knew this British label, since Lonnie Donnegan (one of his stated musical heroes) recorded on it.

The 2 assocations above (drug/aphrodysiac, record/music) sit nicely together to rationaluse Paul's 'Joe Pye-rariry' outburst.

- the 'prairy wallflowers' probably have their origin in the known expression 'prairy wild flowers'. Difficult to say whether this is prompted by the prairy association in Joe Pye-rairy, or whether it is actaully the first thought (Joe Pye-rairy following from it). Either way, they are closely linked, since Joe Pye is a wildflower. Now, why the change form wild- to wall-flower ?

Here, we can consider the actual purpose of Paul's remark: he conjures up a name for the group that just performed SIL. It is not too much of a stretch to assume that in Paul's mind Joe Pyerairy refers to Paul McCartney: he actually just sang the song, and the rythm of the two names is the same.

What about the Wallflowers ? Not too dificult either. Paul just played SIL solo; furthermore, the Beatles - as a musical group - fell apart during the White sessions: Paul recorded songs (Wild Honey Pie)without any other Beatles being present,

Lennon made Revolution 9 all alone etc.. Clearly, the other Beatles (or Lennon at least) had become 'wallflowers' to Paul in the Beatles.

So there we are, Joe Pye-rairy and the prairy wallfowers explained; in this light, Paul could hardly have said anything different.........

Thank goodness it was really just William Campbell all along.

Mystery Solved !

Found this about Paul's father, Jim:

"Before moving to Forthlin Road, Jim had been secretary of the Speke Horticultural Society, and had often sent Paul and Michael out to canvass for new members. Jim planted dahlias and snapdragons in the front garden of Forthlin Road and regularly trimmed the lavender hedge, although it was Paul's job to collect horse manure from the local streets in a bucket to be dug into the flowerbeds."

Clearly, Paul's interest in flowers originates here. (and he is not dead 8) )
